Thiên Chúa đã yêu thế gian đến nỗi đã ban Con Một Người để tất cả những ai tin ở Con của Người, thì không phải hư mất, nhưng được sống đời đời,
Gott hat die Welt so sehr geliebt, dass er seinen einzigen Sohn hingab, damit jeder, der an ihn glaubt, nicht zugrunde geht, sondern das ewige Leben hat.
For God had such love for the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever has faith in him may not come to destruction but have eternal life.

vì Thiên Chúa không sai Con của Người giáng trần để luận phạt thế gian, nhưng để thế gian nhờ Con của Người mà được cứu độ.
Denn Gott hat seinen Sohn nicht in die Welt gesandt, damit er die Welt richtet, sondern damit die Welt durch ihn gerettet wird.
God did not send his Son into the world to be judge of the world; he sent him so that the world might have salvation through him.

Ai tin Người Con ấy, thì không bị luận phạt. Ai không tin thì đã bị luận phạt rồi, vì không tin vào danh Con Một Thiên Chúa
Wer an ihn glaubt, wird nicht gerichtet; wer nicht glaubt, ist schon gerichtet, weil er an den Namen des einzigen Sohnes Gottes nicht geglaubt hat.
The man who has faith in him does not come up to be judged; but he who has no faith in him has been judged even now, because he has no faith in the name of the only Son of God.

và đây là án luận phạt: là sự sáng đã đến thế gian và người đời đã yêu sự tối tăm hơn sự sáng, vì hành động của họ xấu xa.
Denn mit dem Gericht verhält es sich so: Das Licht kam in die Welt, und die Menschen liebten die Finsternis mehr als das Licht; denn ihre Taten waren böse.
And this is the test by which men are judged: the light has come into the world and men have more love for the dark than for the light, because their acts are evil.

Thật vậy, ai hành động xấu xa thì ghét sự sáng, và không đến cùng sự sáng, sợ những việc làm của mình bị khiển trách,
Jeder, der Böses tut, hasst das Licht und kommt nicht zum Licht, damit seine Taten nicht aufgedeckt werden.
The light is hated by everyone whose acts are evil and he does not come to the light for fear that his acts will be seen.

nhưng ai hành động trong sự thật, thì đến cùng sự sáng, để hành động của họ được sáng tỏ, là họ đã hành động trong Thiên Chúa.
Wer aber die Wahrheit tut, kommt zum Licht, damit offenbar wird, dass seine Taten in Gott vollbracht sind.
But he whose life is true comes to the light, so that it may be clearly seen that his acts have been done by the help of God.
